Definition
Maps rank is the position a business appears in Google Maps results for a given search and location — 1st, 2nd, 3rd and so on.
Why it matters
Customers rarely scroll far. The top few results get most of the calls and clicks, especially on mobile. Moving from 8th to 3rd can change a business's month.
What influences it
Google describes local ranking in terms of:
- relevance — how well the profile matches the search
- distance — how close the business is to the searcher
- prominence — how well-known and well-reviewed it is
Practically: categories, completeness of the profile, reviews (count, rating, recency), website quality and links.
Rank is personal
Results change with the searcher's location and the exact words. A rank is always "for this search, from this place".
For outreach
Prospect Cheap records each Google Maps lead's rank for the keyword and location that found it. Agencies use it to:
- find businesses just outside the top 3
- show owners where they stand
- compare them with the businesses above

Example
For "family lawyer Tampa", a firm ranks 7th. The three firms at the top have 150–400 reviews and complete profiles; the 7th has 60 reviews and few photos. That gap is a clear starting point for local SEO.
