How to get web design clients

Referrals are great until they dry up. Here is a system that brings web design clients every week.

Choose a niche you can talk about

A designer who "builds websites" competes with everyone. A designer who "builds websites for roofers that turn storm-season searches into calls" competes with almost no one. Pick a niche where you have an example, an interest or a contact. Each industry page lists what businesses in that niche buy and who decides.

Find the businesses that need you

Two lists work best:

  1. No website at all — filter a Google Maps list by No website. These businesses rely on reviews and word of mouth and are losing customers who want to check them out online. See finding businesses without websites.
  2. Weak websites — open the website column and look for sites that are slow, not mobile-friendly, have no clear phone button or no booking.

Prioritise businesses with good ratings and many reviews: they are busy, can afford a site and have something to show off.

Lead with a mock-up

For your top 20 prospects each week, make a quick homepage mock-up using their name, logo or photos (from their Maps listing or socials) and reviews. A screenshot of their own business looking great online is far more persuasive than a portfolio link.

Send a short email — or call

Hi Tom — Greenline has a 4.9 rating from 80 reviews, but no website for people to check before they call. I mocked up a homepage for you (attached). Want me to make it live?

Many trades owners respond faster to a call or text than to email; your list includes phone numbers and often mobile numbers.

Make buying easy

  • one clear package price and a monthly care plan
  • a timeline ("live in 10 days")
  • examples from the same niche
  • a simple contract and invoice

Turn every client into the next one

Ask for a review and a referral when the site goes live. Owners know other owners in their trade. Add the site to your niche portfolio — after three roofing sites, you're the roofing website person.

Keep a weekly rhythm

  • Monday: build a list in one niche and two towns.
  • Tuesday: make 10–20 mock-ups.
  • Wednesday–Thursday: send and call.
  • Friday: follow up and update your pipeline.

Costs

With Prospect Cheap, a list of 500 businesses costs 500 credits. The Starter plan's 10,000 monthly credits ($29) cover far more prospects than one designer can contact.
