How to sell websites to local businesses

Local businesses need websites — but they don't buy "web design". They buy more calls. Here is how to sell it that way.

Find the right businesses

Two groups convert best:

  • No website at all but good reviews — use the No website filter in a Google Maps list. See how to find them.
  • Outdated websites — slow, not mobile-friendly, no booking. Open the website column and look.

Pick a niche

Trades, clinics and personal services buy websites often and value them. Pick one to start — roofers, dentists, landscapers — so your examples and wording fit.

Lead with a mock-up

Nothing sells like seeing their own business on a nice homepage. Build a quick mock-up with their name, photos (from their Maps listing or socials) and reviews, and send a screenshot.

Keep the offer simple

  • one price for a standard site
  • a monthly plan for hosting, updates and small changes
  • a clear timeline ("live in 10 days")

The first message

"Hi Tom — your 4.9 rating on Google is impressive, but there's no website for people to check before they call. I mocked up a homepage for Greenline Landscaping (attached). Want me to make it live?"

Follow up by phone

Many local owners reply faster to a call or text than to email. Your list includes phone numbers and, often, mobile numbers.

Ask for reviews and referrals

Every finished site is a case study for the next business in the same niche — and owners know other owners.

Objections you will hear

  • "I get enough work from referrals." — Ask how referrals check them out. Most look them up online before calling.
  • "I tried a website before and it did nothing." — Ask what it was for. A site that isn't on Google or has no clear call button won't bring calls; yours will be built for that.
  • "It's too expensive." — Break it into a monthly cost and compare it to one job.

Show results in their language

Owners care about calls, bookings and quote requests. Add a call-tracking number or a simple form so you can show "12 quote requests this month" in your first check-in.

Build a niche portfolio

After three sites for landscapers, you are "the website person for landscapers". Your examples, copy and even your pricing get easier to sell to the next one. Prospect Cheap makes it simple to build a list of every landscaper in the next town.
